Nags Head – The Planning Board met last week and discussed proposed zoning ordinance text amendments that would bring the town into compliance with NC Session Law 2015-86 as it relates to the local regulation of design and aesthetic controls and the number of bedrooms for single-family and two-family residential structures. A zoning ordinance amendment was also discussed that would limit the size of these structures to 3,500 square feet. The current size limit is 5,000 sq. feet. Several members of the Outer Banks Home Builders Association attended the meeting and spoke in opposition of the reduction in size. They shared the impact it would have on existing town property owners, especially those already in the process of working with engineers and developing site plans.
After a lengthy debate, the Planning Board recommended denial of the ordinance amendments.
A public hearing will be held during the Board of Commissioners meeting on August 5th at 9 am to consider the amendments.
